
The open-world design allows players to roam freely in Liberty City, which is made up of three main islands and the neighboring state. In addition to the quests, the player is free to roam the game's open world and complete optional side quests. There can be multiple active quests running at the same time, as some quests require the player to wait for instructions or other events. In GTA IV Players complete missions with linear scenarios and set goals to progress in the story. Some areas were renamed from their previous versions in earlier GTA games, such as Brocklyn to Broker and Brix was changed to Bohan. The design of the city focuses on entertaining New York's four boroughs: Broker (based in Brooklyn), Dukes (Queens), Bohan (The Bronx) and Algonquin (Manhattan), as well as the neighboring state of Alderney, a pastiche of New Jersey.
